What is a Toolbox Talk?

A Toolbox Talk is traditionally a short, informal discussion about something that matters on site. It might happen in the site hut before work starts or over a cuppa, giving people a chance to talk through a safety issue, a change in practice or something they need to know.

Ours bring that idea online. NOCN's Toolbox Talks are short eLearning modules, each taking 10 or 20 minutes, that people work through on the NOCN Hub at a time that suits them. They aren't videos: each one takes people through the topic step by step, ending with a short assessment.

They keep the same spirit as a good site conversation: natural, practical and respectful of people's experience, with clear examples and useful reminders that connect directly to the job. Every module comes with a poster, infographic or aide-mémoire to take back to the team, and a certificate for those who pass.

The focus

Why building safety?

The series focuses on the Building Safety Act 2022 and the building safety reforms developed following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

The modules help people refresh their knowledge, understand the responsibilities relevant to their role and recognise when to ask questions or raise concerns. Topics cover working within competence, following approved information, recording work accurately and supporting safer buildings.

Inside each module

What does each module include?

Each module introduces the topic in plain language, explains why it matters and connects it to practical responsibilities on site.

  • A plain-language introduction

The topic explained simply, without assuming specialist knowledge.

  • Why it matters

How the topic connects to the responsibilities people hold on site.

  • Clear examples and warning signs

Situations people will recognise from their own work, and what to look out for.

  • A final checklist

Helps people consider what they need to do before moving on.

  • Something to keep

A poster, infographic or aide-mémoire to keep key points visible and support further discussion.

  • A certificate

Available to learners who pass the assessment.

Example module

Golden Thread Awareness

For higher-risk buildings in England, the Golden Thread provides a digital record of information needed to understand the building and support its safety throughout its lifecycle.

That record relies on the decisions people make and the evidence they capture. The Golden Thread Awareness module explores following current approved drawings, using the correct products, recording inspections and capturing evidence before safety-critical work is covered.

It also highlights practical warning signs, such as missing test records, outdated drawings or photographs that cannot be linked to a particular location.

Building safety depends on people understanding their responsibilities and feeling able to speak up when something is unclear. A short, well-timed conversation can help turn that understanding into action.
